Jewelry for Wonhee Kim
Throughout the design of this creative piece, Wonhee included many unique features. To ensure the cuff's security and comfort, an ear post was incorporated. She designed the butterfly's body as a rail to allow movement, giving the illusion of flight. In the earring, additional movement was added with the graceful, diamond-encrusted spiral, to finish this whimsical piece.

There are several unique features incorporated into this design when it was created. The designer incorporated an ear post into the design to ensure they fit securely to the ear, also allowing the ear cuff to feel comfortable. The rail is designed on the body of the butterfly to allow the wings movement and the illusion of active flying. Finally, the design was created and specifically set the spiral with diamonds, giving the piece graceful movement and a whimsical look.

Both pieces were created in Matrix. The body of the butterfly is cast in rose gold and the remaining parts are created in white gold. The stones on the butterfly are pear shaped and Rhodolite melee, with various sized diamonds on the spiral portion. Both pieces incorporate chains and bezel set pear shaped moonstones, representing the misty haze.
The most challenging part of this piece was transforming my vision into a wearable piece, that also represents specific shapes of a butterfly. It was also very challenging to incorporate movement into my ear cuff design concept and idea. My final challenge was to create a piece that was both active, functional, and comfortable. I feel that I overcame this challenge by creating piece that clearly communicated my vision, incorporated movement, and is comfortable to wear.
The project was designed and completed in February 2020 in Carlsbad, CA, USA.
The cuff is connected to the earring back by soldering the chain to the post, ensuring the 6mm diamond stud is secure to the ear. The chain incorporated in the design, makes the piece more versatile both in design and style. The body of the butterfly is created in two parts, the rail and the cap. The back of the butterfly wing moves freely and comfortably inside the rail and with the body capped by soldering. The earring portion has a flower with the pistil that works as a rivet, allowing the spiral and chains to spin and move.
My research began first by observing and understanding a shape of butterflies and movement. After I understood the shape and movement, I then researched how to incorporate and design a piece that is intricate, classic, fine, and balanced. Also, because there are very few ear cuff displays available as a reference, I had to design and create my own custom stand for this piece. I researched everything using online resources.
I was inspired to create this piece after listening to the song, Pink Butterfly, composed by Marco Martini. The music gave me the inspiration of a butterfly flying in the early morning, in a foggy mist during sunrise. This beautiful vision inspired me to design a set of ear cuffs, both have a butterfly flying on top of the ear with moving wings. Based on my vision, this earring design represents the butterflies flying on top of a flower with a moving spiral, representing the whimsical mist.
