The Ray

Brooch for Wonhee Kim

The Ray is a brooch inspired by a ray of sunlight appearing through the clouds on a cloudy day. The base color of the brooch is dark, as the piece uses black rhodium plated metal and a black diamond. Bright gemstones are combined with the dark base to brighten the whole piece. The pearls give a soft glow, while the diamonds add sparkle next to the dark metal. The brooch was developed as a three-dimensional digital model. The Ray measures 50 by 30 by 17 millimeters.

The most challenging part of this piece was transforming the dark image into bright object, still containing the dark element.

Project Duration

The project was designed and completed in June 2022 in Milan, Italy

Research

My research began first by observing the cloudy day and capture the moment of the ray that comes out from the cloud. After I understood the shape and movement of the light, I then researched how to incorporate and design a piece that is fine, and balanced. I researched everything using online resources.

Inspiration

The inspiration of the brooch comes from the ray of sunlight appearing through the clouds on a cloudy day. The luster of the pearls gives and extra soft glow and the sparkle of the diamonds stands out like a ray of sunlight next to dark metal and black diamonds.
