Production Technology
The exterior part of the backpack is crafted from polyester with a water-resistant coating to provide waterproofing feature. The lining is made of polyester, also with a waterproof coating. The high elastic suspension belt is constructed from high elastic fibers that are woven and sewn.
Design Challenge
In the design stage, it was challenging to identify an appropriate measure of elasticity of the elastic fibers and select a suitable high elastic material. The designer has to consider a proper extent of weight load on back that keeps the suspension device reasonably reducing weight under normal condition and yields an appropriate level of elasticity depending on specific loads, and the material used should be elastic and durable enough to mitigate the impacts of loads, but not too elastic, failing which the backpack may be unstable.
Project Duration
The project kicked off in February 2023 in Quanzhou, Fujian. With deep-going communication about the product with user, three modifications have been made for product structure and design. Finally the product development and testing wrapped up in December 2023.
Operation Flow
The high elastic suspension device absorbs the weight of the backpack and spreads the force by compression and stretching when user walks with it on his back, thus reducing the impact on the back and spine. The elastic fibers or materials disposed in the device can cushion vibration and make adaptive adjustment as the loading force changes, and continuously reduce weight and give a comfortable experience.
Research
As medical expert recommended that the weight loading on back should not exceed 10-15% of body weight, a standard laid down for the sake of protecting spinal health and preventing back injuries. The attempt to carry a load exceeding the reasonable value may impose undue pressure and burden on the back and spine, as this may cause discomfort, pain or even injury.
Inspiration
The high elastic suspension belt is inspired by automobile air suspension technology, and both resemble in principle and function. The air suspension features an air pressure adjustment system that automatically adjusts the height and stiffness of the suspension, in order to deliver a stable driving experience. In like manner, the weight-reducing, high-stiffness suspension straps can diminish the vibration transferred from the backpack and eases the impact on the user's back and spine when user is walking, which means a comfortable carrying experience.
Project Overview
