Womenswear Collection for Yunji Lee
In her collection, Flatter Your Body, Yunji Lee presents a revamped version of corsets. Using angles and optical illusion, the designs alter the shape of any figure without the discomfort of original corsets. This collection consists of unbalanced and oversized versions of classic items such as suits, tailored jackets, and dresses with menswear elements. Most compelling is the light-weight wool dress, with straps that can be adjusted around the bust, waist, and hips to flatter the body. It seems that even the word fitted can take on a whole new shape.

The looks are created with the initial idea to embrace all the different body types. The collection consists of a new revamped version of corsets that were originally discomforting to wear. The silhouette is a bit loose and it can be adjusted depending on your body shape with the lacing straps. In each look, multiple straps are placed around the bust, waist, and hips, which allows you to flatter your body figure by tightening and loosening the straps partially.
Optical illusion, Stripe, Corset, Asymmetricity, Embracement
The placement of fabric in each garment also resembles the X-ray of a human body. For example, light and dark blue colored fabrics are layered and patched together, and black is used on the side. Layered items are also presented in the look. As the garments are for the Spring/ Summer season, light wool, cotton, and wool crepe are mainly used. The silhouette is a bit loose and it can be adjusted depending on your body shape with the lacing straps. In each look, multiple straps are placed around the bust, waist, and hips, which allows you to flatter your body figure by tightening and loosening the straps partially. The optical illusion is an additional method that is used to maximize the effect of flattering, and stripe print and pleats are the elements to create the effect. The straps will also create movement in each look, and it will add the effect of optical illusion. The asymmetrical length and unbalanced detail elements will boost the aesthetic.
The main challenge of this journey was to create the right silhouette and garment construction that resembles a corset but still provide comfort by placing straps at the right place to create the looks that flatter your body shape. Thus, the fabric selection was the most important decision since it resulted in totally different silhouettes depending on fabrics.
The project started in November 2019 and finished in August 2020 in Atlanta, USA.
The looks can transform the shapes by how much you tighten the straps on the body and where you place the straps depending on the silhouette you want to draw around your body.
The project aims to transform fashion into a non-stereotypical medium, which is used as a tool to help people to express who they are and not to be judged based on what society incorrectly portrays. By the "Beauty Standard" that social media portrays, consumers are being judged by their external looks only.
There exists a desire in human nature to attract and impress by any means necessary and this has been a long-standing goal throughout the history of fashion. A plethora of methods has been employed to achieve this goal. Some of those methods aimed to accentuate, conceal, or even alter the human body shape, but it often results in physical discomfort. Historically, the corset has been developed to satisfy human's goal to flatter the different body figures to fit the "beauty standard" of the era.
