Since being a student who studies fashion, the two standard pattern design methods, prototype and drapping, need to define the gender in advance to continue the design process. Although the research study and inspire the prototype from the ancient unisex attires, it is difficult to avoid the old design thinking but abandon the gender limitation. However, throughout a few rounds of the design experiment and modify the design thinking and process to melt the genderless concept and flexible design to fit with different gender one item design.
The project started in August 2019 in Bangkok and finished in August 2020 in Bangkok, and was exhibited in Bangkok in September 2020 and Taipei in December 2020. The collection was also invited to present in the “Taipei Da-Dao-Cheng International Fashion Showcase”. The collection has been selected in “2021 Bangkok Design Week” and will exhibit in Bangkok in May 2021.
The genderless collection project gains the idea of flexibility to fit with the different gender bodies. Each item of the project was designed with different flexibility to adjust to fit with different bodies, such as connection, materials, and folding prototype. The genderless project presents the garments on male and female bodies to show the various conditions that discovering the genderless concept not to hide gender body but blur the boundary to free the standard gender fashion.
The practical research explores a genderless collection wearable fitting with both gender bodies in one item with a flexible design that inspires from Western and Eastern ancient unisex attires. This study applies analyzing method to identify history, modernization, structure, and wearable skills to develop the practical experiment and melt various flexible designs with ancient costume prototypes to modernizes the collection. The genderless concept, not hiding body but free the standard gendered fashion to enable self-identity.
The genderless collection project inspires from the ancient unisex attires during the periods that gender and costume without a strong connection. Moreover, take the view from western to eastern culture, the project collects four ancient unisex attires of Greek Chiton, Roma Tunic, China Shenyi, and Thai Jongkraben. Throughout the analysis and comparison of the prototype, wearable skill, silhouette, features, materials to gain the ideas to melt into modern genderless fashion design.
